Linux Editions
Debian GNU/Linux
Debian GNU/Linux is the preferred OS at NetRiver. Here are some of the reasons we choose Debian:- Best Packaging System: The Dpkg packaging system provides great dependancy checking.
- Incredible amounts of software: The debian repositories have over 18,000 packages. If that isn't enough, there are many 3rd-party repositories providing bleed-edge software and versions.
- Huge Support: The mailing lists, forums, wikies and manuals for debian provide a lot of support, often by the people that developed the code.
- Stability: We need our OS as stable as possible, and the great testing that goes into the debian packages really cements it as a stable platform for our users.
- NetRiver supported version:
- Etch 4.0r5

CentOS
The Community ENTerprise Operating System is built from publicly available source packages from RedHat.- RedHat Compatibility: CentOS provides compatibility with any linux software designed for a RedHat system, as CentOS is RedHat without the name or support.
- Strong Update and Package Manager: The yum software manager provides updates and package installation.
- Broad Documentation and Support: Since anything written for RedHat works for CentOS, there is a lot of documentation and howtos available.
- NetRiver supported version:
- 5.2

Ubuntu
Ubuntu is primarily a desktop-oriented project, but their Server Edition is a good platform for those familiar with the system- Debian Compatibility: Ubuntu is built on Debian, so most documentation and packages written for Debian will work with Ubuntu. Binary compatibility is not guaranteed, as Ubuntu often uses newer versions of libraries and system code.
- Stable but Leading-edge: Packages in the Ubuntu repositories are often newer than their counterparts in the Debian repositories.
- NetRiver supported versions:
- 8.04 LTS, 8.10 Server Edition
